Flax works was established in 2001 by mother and daughter, Sandra and Michelle Wooster of Ngapuhi, Ngati Te Ata, Ngati Raukawa,Tainui, and Ngati Kirihika tribal decent. Sandra and Michelle Wooster are of Maori descent. The Maori people, indigenous to New Zealand, first settled in New Zealand between AD 800 and AD 1300, and continue to refine the art of Raranga (flax weaving) to this day.
Whiwhi Te Rangi is the name of Sandra's 87 year old Mother which is included on their business logo. "The treasures of the heavens are yours" is an interpretation from her name. This is reflected in their weaving as she spends her life giving unconditionally.
Sandra is a school teacher who learnt the art of Raranga (flax weaving) several years prior to encouraging her daughter Michelle to learn. The love and passion for their Maori heritage took them on a journey of weaving natural fibres. Michelle was able to work full time creating and experimenting with patterns, style, colours and fibres. Their talents compliment each other, producing both contempary and traditional work. The desire for the craft to flourish has seen their efforts grow into a vibrant cottage business. The dream is for future generations to value, share and keep alive an ancient craft.
Natural Fibre Artists Sandra and Michelle Wooster share their skills and knowledge with others who are willing to learn.
Flaxworks have exhibited their work in New Zealand and their kete have been taken to many parts of the world.
